FUN WAYS TO UP-CYCLE YOUR OLD TIRES

feature - tires

If you’ve owned a car, you’ve probably purchased at least one set of tires in your lifetime.  At Precision Auto, we’ve helped countless people purchase, install and recycle tires over the years, which got us thinking, why not take your old tires home and have a little fun with them?  It turns out tires are extremely versatile, including garden planters, kid’s toys, playground projects, even patio /deck planters and furniture!

Check out our top projects and some helpful tips to get you on the way to up-cycling your used tires!

GARDEN and LANDSCAPING

Choose  some fun colours for your tires and use them either by themselves or layer them up!  Scatter them in the garden and fill with dirt and flowers.  Hang them on fences, posts, walls and have hanging flowers flowing from them!

Great in landscaping!  Retaining walls are a great use for old tires.  You can create a wall going straight up or angle it back, just make sure your tires are staggered!  Make it a little greener by adding some plants hanging out of the center of the tires!  Another great idea is to create steps where you have a bit of a hill.  Create a pathway in your garden, on a hill, at the cottage to head down to the water!

DECKS and PATIOS

Like in the garden, add them to your deck, but maybe put the flowers in some plastic pots first so as to lessen the mess.

You can create some fun patio furniture with the tires as well.  Tables, chairs, stools!  I plan on trying to make a few of the side tables!  I’m going to stack two tires and add a little glass top.  Always need a place to put my drink while enjoying a cocktail in the evening!

For the stools, cut out a piece of plywood in the size of the center of the tire, cover it with padding and fabric.  Pull the fabric underneath and staple it down.  Now you have a nice cushion top.  Maybe attach some legs or wheels to the bottom of the tire.

KID’S TOYS and PLAYGROUNDS

If you have the space, create a fun climbing wall for the kid’s by attaching different size tires at various spots on an angled wood wall for them to climb!  Create small teeter totter toys, fun tire animals, bike racks, and the good ol’ classic tire swing!

Clean up a smaller tire really well and add shelves to the center of the tire, hang on the wall and have the child add their favorite cars and toys they’d like to put on display!

I saw a great idea for our shop, so this Christmas, I want to paint some tires in white and create a fun snowman to display in our front office!

TIP 1:

If you’ve decided to paint your tires or display them as furniture, they will need to be washed to ensure any grime is taken off.  Depending on your project, you may also want to paint them in some fun bright colours.

TIP 2:

If outside, dark colours will absorb the sun’s heat and make the tire hotter to touch.  Lighter colours are better for painting.

TIP 3:

Once cleaned, use a spray primer so the paint adheres better.  Any durable, non-toxic, outdoor paint will do, but a commercial grade for industrial or marine use will be better.
